Roberts a great motivator for the Penguins

Play Video: Roberts a great motivator for the Penguins

Grapes thinks Gary Roberts has the motivational skills of a great coach and wonders if the Islanders aren't aiming for Ryan Miller's head. Don also uses some video evidence to defend his opinion of Colby Armstrong's hit on Patrick Eaves.

what's this Thierry guy talkin about? Gary has never been dirty his whole career. He is the most true, hard-working, grity, motivational, determined hockey player I have ever seen, but he has NEVER played dirty. Not one bit. He is definetly the epitomy of a great all-around hockey player.

I think Colby's hit on Eaves was good. I was a Scott Stevens fan from the day he got drafted until he retired. I am just curious what the reaction would be if another player maybe Sean Avery got the chance to hit say Sidney Crosby. Would you think the reaction is different? I say yes it would be and it shouldn't be. Keep your head up and if not try your best to avoid it. Otherwise hopefully get the number of the truck and maybe you can repay later.

The hit on Eaves was clean, but Grapes' advice for payers to "keep track of who's on the ice" - as a way to avoid this kind of hit during a shift, or be aware of its potential to happen because a certain player is on - is not the most practical.

Of far more value and use would be the ages old practice of keeping your head up. If Eaves, or any payer for that matter, sees it coming they can avoid the hit.

I'm Happy Ottawa Din't get Roberts. I know "Cherry" is his biggess fan, But I think Hes A+ nasty player.

I know alot of people think Ottawa's going to Lose in The 2nd But i just can't see it happening. If u look at the line up, u'll notice somthing diffrent from all the urly years. 80% of the team is Canadien Now.

Ottawa Geting Roberts this year would have been a insult to all the great players already there.

Funny how ever since They got the cluch and grabing out of the NHL The toronto Make Belives havent made the playoffs.

The Ottawa Senators brought their A game throughout this series. Our players are all very skilled and can play various positions where needed.

Pittsburgh is an inexperienced team, but, has a great future. It just was not their time. They were truly worthy opponents.

Senators Management and Coaches felt this was the team that would take them to the playoffs and they were proven right. Did we need Roberts? No! Love the guy? Yes.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Sidney Crosby whines more often than not, and also embellishes a lot of checks he gets. Sure it's remarkable that he captured the scoring title this year, but I find that he lacks class. Maybe it will come with for experience, but for now I hate to see pouting on the ice. Did Mario and Gretzky ask like this when they were new to the league? I'd like to see Ron and Don talk about this one.

Only the monkey and myself thought Vancouver could do it against Dallas.

How did Atlanta get into the playoffs? Jeez, what a joke they have been.

The refereeing once again is a farce and a joke. Maybe replays should be used to determine some of the penalties.

I normally love Cherry, but I disagree with his comments about Armstrongs hit on Eaves. I'm sorry, but a shot to the head like that is never forgivable. Let's look at it a bit differently. It was a Pittsburgh goon against a Sens finesse player. Not an equal matchup. Armstrong was out for blood, plain and simple.

Nice to see the refs are ruining every series in these playoffs!! Maybe the only one was the NYR series. Every other team is getting screwed. Whitney for elbowing. Yea ok. Charging to Ruutu? For what charging his own player?! LOL. Yet Crosby has to get whacked 10 times before they call something. If they called it the way they should, Pens would have a lot more momentum.

I have no idea how many times I've heard grapes say "keep your head up" .
I can see in another 3-4 yrs a lot of pure hockey fans in Canada not watching the N.H.L because Gary Bettman is slowly turning the greatest sport in north America into the European hockey league, That way all the guys from over the pond can come and play in the new softer league, And with Bettman doing everything in his power to make the american dictake how are game is played...Gary American can handle a little fighting after all is there a more violent culture than American culture.

My dearest DON,

You have done more to inject life into our CANADIAN game in lord knows how long.I salute
you for your diligence in keeping the faith,
what with all BB has done Americanize our
National Game.
Now for all you whiners in Ottawa,at least
those who reached puberty back in the 20th
century, ya gotta (no pun intended), remember
a revolting offencive pass interference call
against call on Tony Gabriel, that was obviously pass interference against Edmonton.
That hedious cost The Rough Riders the Grey
Cup.
What I find ironic about the poor Quality of
officiating in the CFL back in those days and,
because of the lattitude BB has given the NHL
refs, the Penguins would be tied or ahead of
your poor Sens, who believe me will eventually
self destruct sooner if not later. Game one was an officiating nightmare, and I realy
believe the worst is yet to come.
By the way Grapes your not off the hook either. It's my opinion the you caused Sid
the Kid the Calder last year and all the non
calls against him since. Sorry pal I too call
them like I seeum.
Respectfully yours
Moe Mallory

Apparently it's not for his size or skills that got him banned but because he and his teamates are anglophones.....

Ottawa is truly playing sound hockey, but I was interested in the lack of comment about the Pittsburgh charging penalty on their own player that led to Ottawa's first (lucky) goal and changed the energy level that Pittsburgh stated with! Ottawa would still have won, but it would have been a better game - inexperience lets bad outcomes dominate. It's hard to regroup when there is no room for error!
And what about head hits? There was no comment on the head contact on Phaneuf last night ... it showed greater intent than Armstrong to hit a head! Look at the body action in slow-motion!

Cheers!

I agree with your comments on Gary Roberts. Leafs make playoffs if he would've been there. Who cares about Ottawa, they will choke next round anyway. Also I also agree that the hit was NOT an intentional head check and he was finishing his check just like a great player should. Go Canucks Go!

Hey Ron and Don,
How about Vincent Lecavalier for MVP this year. He had 108 points on the season and was a whopping +2. Wow! I think he should probably be considered for the Selke as well! I saw "Vinnie" when he came back to Calgary and he never came back into his own end once! He hung out around centre and the Flames blue line on every shift. Please, Please, all of the broadcasters who keep talking about him for MVP. Stop. What ever happened to the good ol' fashioned 100+ point 30+ MVP candidate. It is ridiculous.

I like Don and find his comments very insightful. I realize that the Canadian teams in the playoff are not his "favorites". However, with all due respect, I would like to hear him talk more about Canadian teams rather than his Canadian buddies playing on American teams. After all, he should realize that most people who watch his show are fans in Canada cheering for a Canadian team. Furthermore, the way the Canucks are playing deserves a more enthusiastic response than "they are playing well, they have a good goalie" from one of the greatest Canadians ever!

How come Coach's Corner only covers the eastern conference teams? I think CBC should alternate between all the Canadian teams. At least the Leafs aren't in the playoffs, I'd rather listen to them talk about the Sens any day rather than the centre-of-the-universe -- Toronto.

I think it would be great if you guys could use Quicktime instead of Windows Media for the video feed during playoffs, because often Windows Media player does not work with Mac computers. At least my computer has been having troubles being compatible with the Windows Media program. I only own a Mac laptop and so when I am in the United States going to school and working this summer, I can't watch the games without going through a lot of trouble to find somewhere to watch. The NHL playoffs are also not broadcast in most places on TV so I also cannot watch it unless I find a place with satellite TV which is not common in a college community. If there is another way to watch playoffs, that would be awesome to know.

The last time I looked the Ottawa Senators
are up 3 games to one. I'm sick of hearing about Gary Roberts, I never cared for his dirty style, but, I do respect him as a person.

Gary Roberts is having an influence on the inexperienced Pittsburgh team, that's great, however, he is not the only player in this series, and it's very tiring hearing Cherry go on night after night about Roberts.

Come on Don, there are two teams in this game, how about talking about the only Eastern Conference Canadian team to made the playoffs. No one can deny the Senators are playing fabulous hockey night in night out in this series, and deserve mention and discussion on our own CBC.

Don, you crack me up. Without question you are one of the most entertaining mugs in sports broadcasting. You got it right about Calgary last night and were bang on about the huge contribution Roberts brings for any team he plays for. But is Roberts the story? I say he is old news. The story should be the game and the series. Alfie and the Sens are the story this time and if it weren't for Ottawa going boffo in the third last Saturday this series would be over. Ottawa's first goal last night wasn't even shown during the first intermission! Sure it was a fluke play but if someone like me turned the game on late in the first we didn't know (until we turned to TSN for highlights). So kudos for the 20 years of Abbott and Costello but please try and cover the game at hand.

Tnanks Don and Ron for another great coaches corner. Gary Roberts is a troublemaker for Ottawa and the best way to deal with him is just to ignore him and play your game. He is also a brown noser he sucks up to the referees because he obviously does not have the talent to play the game like everyone else. He is no Sidney Crosby or Danny Heatley. Brown nosers like him who brown nose up to the referees need to be regulated because what Gary Roberts is doing is cheating. He is not playing hockey he is being a politian on skates.
Sincerely
A F Armstrong

All the people that have won a championship playing hockey know what it takes to win. If that means making hard nosed plays, crashing and banging in the corner and maybe getting away with the odd cheap shots, so be it. This is what it takes to win. To say Gary Roberts isn't a solid player is ridiculous. There's a reason why he is still playing at his age. It's the same reason why people love Tucker.

ATTENTION**DAVE GIRARD** I would like to thank you for being a hockey fan that knows what they are talking about!!! Finally somone who sees the Armstrong hit for what it actually was: a Part of hockey!! I totally agree with Don, it's a matter of knowing who is on the ice and no it was not a cheap shot to the head or intent to injure. Not armstrong's fault that Eaves cut around the net with his head down. I hate stupid people that exadgerate to the extreme.

I totally agree with Don when it comes to the topic of Armstrong's hit on Eaves. I don't think Cherry is "blaming" the victim, just simply seeing both sides of the hit. Eaves clearly cut around the net, low with his head down. What was armstrong to do?? Good hit, and as far as checking player tendencies... that is dumb because the hit on koivu has nothing to do with tendencies... it is simply hockey. and dont we all agree that a good player will continue to make good clean hits? so that is the only tendency coming from armstrong. DON CHERRY YOU ROCK!!!

"Gary Roberts a true motivator." "Patrick Eves needs to know who's on the ice" "Shubert should have gotten 5 minutes..." yada yada yada...Roberts should have had 3 penalties called against him last night, I agree the hit by Armstrong was legal AS DO MOST OTTAWA FANS, no ones really complaining here so leave it alone Cherry quit blaming Patrick! I'm so incredibly tired of listening to Don Cherry and Bob Cole, the guy almost wet his pants last night when Pittsburg ALMOST scored! Soooo anti Ottawa, it's embarrassing.
Honestly, just TRY to pretent a bit at least, you sound like idiots! Can't PRAISE Toronto anymore so you're keeping the hate on us. Get over it and start acting like true professionals please! I'm tired of having to turn my T.V down and my Radio up!

I can't believe how anti Ottawa you guys are. Stop talking about Roberts, Staal, and Armstrong. Roberts doesn't play hard.. he plays dirty. He gets away with cheap shots no one else would ex. the hit on Volchenkov near the end of the game would have been a 5 min major to anyone else. As for his leadership, I guess that motivational joking with Malone in the pregame did so much. Was Malone even playing, barely heard his name out there. How about some talk about how much the Sens have dominated this series. They have out played Pittsburgh in all but 1 period of the 12, this series should have been a sweep. Pretty impressive considering this was a 4-5 matchup with both teams having identical points. Maybe some talk should be about how Ottawa's depth and skill is far greater than the one line Pens team. Everyone knows your bias towards the Leafs but get over it they didn't make the playoffs again!!! Start putting your support behind a team that has a legitimate shot at the Cup. Go Sens Go!!!

When is Dany Heatly going to show up to play in the playoffs? 50 goals and his most memorable playoff moment is getting filled in by Gary Roberts in game 4. Armstrong may have prevented a goal. I too feel bad for Eves. However, if Armstrong would have coasted in and watch Eves wrap one around and into the net he would have looked like even more of an idiot. I agree with Don and Campbell that you must be aware of who is on the ice. More importantly, if you are cutting out front of the net or accross the blue line with your head down you are taking a huge risk especially when Lord Stanley's cup is on the line.

Next time Grapes is pumpin' Roberts why not show how his check scored Ottawa's winner, or show how he hacked the player in the back in the corner repeately in the dieing seconds rather then go after the puck. Or you may even want to show his slew-foot on the Pittsburgh goal -no one at CBC saw or chose (not to mention). (he actually slew footed the defencemen on the way by, sending the defencemen sprawling backwards. (How do you guys miss this stuff)?

Grapes should be pumpin' up the guys with the real guts that take all this guys cheap shots, really he gets away with a lot.

After years of support for CC, I am beginning to realize this is really for entertainment value only.
