Hockey Night in Canada will broadcast the first-ever NHL regular season outdoor game in the United States,featuring Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins taking on the Buffalo Sabres on New Year's Day 2008.

The Penguins and Sabres will square off at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Jan. 1at 1 p.m. ET. The stadium seats over 80,000 for Buffalo Bills football games.

Host Ron MacLean and the legendary Don Cherry will be on air for the game, to be broadcast in high definition. The game will alsobe streamed online at

CBC Sports presented theHeritage Classic four years ago, the first-ever NHL regular season outdoor game. The gamein Edmonton between the Oilers and Montreal Canadiens attracted an average audience of 2.747 million viewers, which ranks as the second-highestaverage audience for a regular season game all-time for HNIC.

The teams played in front of more than 57,000 fans who braved sub-freezing temperatures.

Hockey Night in Canada begins its 2007-08 schedule with the NHL regular season opener, a game at the new O2 Arena in London, England, between the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.

The broadcast begins at 12 p.m. ET on Sept. 29.
