My name is Cullen Wanvig. I am 8 years old and
play for the McKnight Novice "Ice Dogs". I've been playing hockey
for three years and one of the best parts of it is the rink I help
my Dad make in our back yard.
I have a 10 year old sister named Amy and a little brother named
Steven who is 4. All of us learned to skate in the back yard. Steven
could hardly stand up at the start of winter and now he just zooms
around and can even stop without crashing into the boards.
Most days I can't wait to get home from school and get on the rink.
Sometimes my friends from school or my hockey team come over to
skate. My best friend Ben used to come over all the time because
he lived really close but he moved to California just before Christmas.
I miss him a lot.
Every year we try to do add something new to our rink. We've made
round corners, lines, advertising and this year we made lights go
all the way around and a really cool scoreboard. My team tied the
Minnesota Wild on the scoreboard because my cousin Kyle sometimes
plays for them.
I hope to win the contest but whatever happens I know the most important
part is to play fair and try my best … that's what my coach says
… oh ya, and have fun. And I sure do have a lot of fun in my backyard.
