We built our rink 20'x50' with 3' high boards on the sides and 7'
behind the nets. We painted blue lines, center and goaltender creases
and made a door on hinges to get on and off the ice.
Following in
the Canadian Tradition, we placed a looney at center ice before
we started flooding. Although we don't expect any international
games, there will be some intense neighborhood games.
We built a
4'x8' scoreboard showing our hometown, Dieppe, versus the Leafs,
my favorite team. We put Don Cherry's picture on the scoreboard
as we felt he is as known for hockey in Canada as any person there
is. We even have a little joke for Don on the scoreboard; we're going
to let everyone use their imagination on that one.
On either side
of the scoreboard we hung Montreal and Toronto banners showing their
vast Stanley Cups; these teams represent the two most successful
teams in NHL history. We then drew some HNIC and Home Depot posters
to show our appreciation of this event. We then placed a Moncton
Wildcats banner (QMJHL contenders) across the bottom of our scoreboard
showing our gratitude for local hockey. We hung Don Cherry small
flags around the top and on the boards to give our rink some design.
We still felt that something was missing so we built our own Stanley
Cup with tin foil and our finishing touch was the Hockey Night in
Canada logo at center ice.
