Ice Advantage - Backyard Rink Winners
|
|
Our backyard rink, located in Edmonton,
Alberta, may not be the biggest rink out there, but
we think it's one of the best! Built by myself, Mike
Kuhnel, and our lifelong hockey-crazed buddies, our
hand-painted masterpiece measures 40 feet by 20 feet,
and includes all the “extras” needed for
backyard fun!
The
rink hosts a 2-on-2 shinny game most weekends, and has
become a gathering place for friends and families to
celebrate and enjoy our cold Canadian winter!
When
we heard about the Home Ice Advantage Rink Building
Contest, we knew what our 2003 mission was - build the
best outdoor rink as a tribute to our love of the game!
With
the help of our secret weapon, the “RinkRake”,
and the final touches of a great paint job, we think
we’ve succeeded.
We installed stadium lighting for all night shinny games,
and full backboards with cage fencing to keep pucks
in play! A large firepit warms fans and players during
the outdoor action, and even boasts a heated clubhouse
we converted from an old garage.
It’s
carpeted to protect the skates, has cable TV to keep
up with the action on Hockey Night in Canada, and is
packed full of hockey memorabilia from our years growing
up playing Canadian hockey together. It’s a great
place to talk hockey and warm toes in between games.
Ron and Don would love it!
We’re
proud of our backyard rink, and think it would be a
great place to celebrate Hockey Day In Canada! Most
importantly, we’re carrying on the tradition of
Canada’s national sport, with every intention
of doing so for years to come.
