Habs' Markov to get Canadian citizenship
He is now a true Montreal 'Canadian' — in every sense of the word.
Star defenceman Andrei Markov will receive his Canadian citizenship at a ceremony Friday.
The Russian-born Markov will take the oath of citizenship with 27 other people, from 11 different countries, in Montreal.
The 31-year-old has been among the Habs' top-scoring players in recent years and is considered among the league's best defencemen.
However, he has been plagued by injuries and has seen his last two seasons cut short while his team entered the playoffs.
Markov, who has played with the Canadiens for his entire 10-year career, is eligible for free agency after next season.
