The Columbus Blue Jackets traded forward Sergei Fedorov to the Washington Capitals for prospect defenceman Theo Ruth on Tuesday.

Federov, 38, has nine goals and 28 points in 50 games this season. The Russian forward is slated to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer.

The veteran forward and six-time NHL all-star has 470 goals and 1,133 points in 17 NHL seasons with Detroit, Anaheim and Columbus.

Ruth was selected in the second round (46th overall) by Washington in last year's NHL draft.

Tuesday's trade unites two great Russian players: Federov, the league MVP in 1993-94, and 22-year-old Alex Ovechkin, who is touted as a future Hart Trophy winner.
