Atlanta's Sim latest NHL fight casualty
Atlanta forward Jon Sim is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair a broken left orbital bone.
Sim suffered multiple fractures to the bone after a second-period fight with San Jose's Mark Bell in a game Thursday.
Sim, 29, had been playing on Atlanta's top line with Ilya Kovalchuk and Keith Tkachuk. His 17 goals and 28 points are both career highs.
The fight occurred one night after Philadelphia's Todd Fedoruk was knocked unconscious by a punch from Colton Orr of the New York Rangers.
That incident prompted NHL director of hockey operations Colin Campbell to publicly opineitmight betime to study the issue of fighting in the game, the first time in recent memory a league official had questioned its place.
"I'm not afraid now to talk about the fact that we should look at fighting in hockey," said Campbell. "I think if you discussed this even three or four years ago you would have got pooh-poohed out of the game.
"But now I think because of the size of our players, where we're at in sports and in life, I think we have to look at it."
Earlier in the week, Campbell meted out a five-game suspension to Nashville's Jordan Tootoo for a gloved punch that felled Stephane Robidas of Dallas.
