The man who guided boxer Lennox Lewis to the world heavyweight title in the 1990s told Britain’s Sunday Mirror on Sunday that he’s “undergoing a sex change to become a woman.”

Former boxing promoter Frank Maloney, 61, says he is living as a woman called Kellie.

The twice-married Maloney ended his illustrious career last October and told the Sunday Mirror he has been undergoing hormone treatment for two years in preparation for a sex change operation.

"I was born in the wrong body and I have always known I was a woman. I can't keep living in the shadows," Maloney told the Mirror, which also posted a video of the interview.

Lewis voiced his support for Maloney in a statement.

"...I think that all people should be allowed to live their lives in a way that brings them harmony and inner peace," he said via theguardian.com. "I respect Kellie’s decision and say that if this is what brings about true happiness in her life, then so be it. LiveAndLetLive."

Naturally, the story quickly picked up steam on Twitter.
