Frank Rigney won four Grey Cups with the Bombers. (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) Winnipeg Blue Bomber great and CFL hall-of-famer Frank Rigney has died at age 74.
The offensive lineman who played in five Grey Cup games with the Bombers and won four — 1958, 1959, 1961 and 1962 — died Tuesday, according to the Winnipeg Football Club, which issued a news release on Wednesday.
“Frank was a tremendous football player during his time in Winnipeg,” Blue Bomber president Jim Bell stated in the news release.
“He will always be remembered as a champion throughout the province of Manitoba.”
Frank Rigney played 10 years with the Bombers, anchoring the offensive line from 1958-68. (Canadian Football Hall of Fame) Rigney played 10 years with the Bombers, anchoring the offensive line from 1958-68 and earning the title as Western Division most outstanding lineman in 1960 and 1961.
Rigney was a three-time CFL all-star, was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1984 and into the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame in 1985.
Following his football career, Rigney was a regular colour commentator for both the CBC and CTV football broadcasts.
He was most recently living in the West Vancouver area.
