Wide receiver Kerry Watkins was one of a number of Montreal Alouettes on the CFL all-star team. (Paul Chiasson/Canadian Press)Quarterback Anthony Calvillo, running back Avon Cobourne and wide receiver Kerry Watkins made the grade Wednesday as the Montreal Alouettes accounted for 10 spots on the 2009 CFL all-star team.
Calvillo led the CFL with 26 touchdown passes, with just six interceptions. He threw for over 4,000 yards for the eighth time in his career.
Cobourne had a league-high 13 rushing touchdowns, while Watkins got the nod over equally deserving teammate Jamel Richardson after finishing with 81 catches.
Damon Duval occupies two spots for Montreal, recognized as a kicker after a CFL record 242 points and as a punter after a 44.8 average and nine singles.
Larry Taylor didn't have the best punt return average in the league, but the Alouette was the only one with two punt return touchdowns.
Montreal was also represented by defensive end Anwar Stewart, defensive tackle Keron Williams linebacker Chip Cox and guard Scott Flory.
Joining Watkins in the receiver corps are Arland Bruce of Hamilton, Fred Stamps of Edmonton and Jeremaine Copeland of Calgary.
Bruce was deemed expendable by Toronto after discipline issues, but ended up racking up 88 catches and 10 touchdowns despite missing two games.
Stamps led the CFL in total receiving yardage (1,402 yards), with Copeland totalling 80 receptions, just one shy of Stamps for the West lead.
Copeland's teammate, Joffrey Reynolds, rounds out the running back spots after leading the CFL in rushing for a second consecutive season. The other Calgary picks are cornerback Brandon Browner and tackle Ben Archibald.
Riders nab 3 selections
Saskatchewan's strength in the trenches was reflected by three selections: veteran guard Gene Makowsky and centre Jeremy O'Day, and defensive end John Chick, who finished with 11 sacks.
All of the all-stars from B.C. and Winnipeg were on the defensive side of the ball. Perennial honouree Doug Brown led the Bombers, with the defensive tackle named to his sixth all-star team.
Veteran cornerback Jovon Johnson is on the list for the first time after a six-interception campaign, joined by impressive rookie Jonathan Hefney.
Lions defensive back Korey Banks recorded 56 tackles, five sacks, four interceptions to earn his place, with safety Barron Miles earning a second consecutive nod after leading the CFL with eight interceptions.
Bruce went on the list along with three Hamilton teammates: tackle Dan Goodspeed, and linebackers Jamall Johnson and Markeith Knowlton.
The Toronto Argonauts did not have a finalist on the list.
The selections were made by CFL coaches, the Football Reporters of Canada and through fan balloting.
