Former football star Lawrence Taylor has been released on bond following his arrest for a Miami-area traffic accident.

According to Miami-Dade County jail records, the 50-year-old Taylor was charged Sunday with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, a second-degree misdemeanor. He was released on $500 US bond later that night.

A Florida Highway Patrol spokesman says Taylor was involved in a hit-and-run crash Sunday in Hialeah. Taylor told investigators he thought he had hit a guardrail. There were no injuries, and troopers didn't conduct a sobriety test.

The former New York Giants linebacker is considered one of the greatest football players of all time. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1999 after a career that included two Super Bowls, three defensive most valuable player awards and 142 sacks.

Taylor has been candid with his battles with substance abuse during his playing career.

Since retiring he's acted in Shaft and Any Given Sunday, and he appeared as a contestant earlier this year on Dancing With the Stars.
