Tyree is expected to contribute to the Ravens' special teams, and could see time as wide receiver.
Before signing with the Ravens (3-2), the 29-year-old Tyree worked out with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Livingston, N.J., native played 73 games with the New York Giants and helped the team capture its third Super Bowl in 2008 by making an acrobatic catch trapping the ball against his helmet. The 32-yard reception helped keep a crucial fourth-quarter drive alive that eventually led to quarterback Eli Manning hooking up with Plaxico Burress for the winning score.
Tyree missed last season with a hamstring injury, and this summer missed two preseason games because of a series of injuries.
After adding Tyree to the active roster Tuesday, the Ravens placed tight end Tony Curtis on waivers.
The Ravens face the Minnesota Vikings (5-0) on Sunday.
