Steve McNair's widow will handle his estate because he left no will.

Mechelle McNair's request to administer the estate of the former NFL quarterback was granted Wednesday in a Nashville court by Davidson County Probate Judge Randy Kennedy.

She has 60 days to file an inventory of her late husband's assets, which court documents claim is "of sufficient size to be administered."

The two were married on June 21, 1997.

Mechelle McNair listed herself and their sons, Tyler and Trenton, as the heirs to the estate.

He fathered two other sons, Steve Jr. and Steven, in a previous relationship.

McNair, 36, was slain July 4 in a rented condo by his 20-year-old mistress, Sahel Kazemi, who shot him four times as he napped on the couch before turning the gun on herself.

Nashville police ruled it a murder-suicide.

McNair spent 13 seasons in the NFL, completing 60.1 per cent of his pass attempts for 31,304 yards and 174 touchdowns with 119 interceptions in 161 games for the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens

Drafted third overall by the Oilers in 1995, he signed a seven-year, $28.4-million US contract — at the time, a record for a rookie pro — and went on to earn three Pro Bowl selections.
