Lee, the Tennessean/Associated Press)Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair was shot twice in the head and twice in the chest, a Nashville police spokesman said at a Sunday news conference.
Police said McNair, 36, had frequented two bars late Friday and early Saturday, the last hours of his life. McNair and Sahel Kazemi, 20, were found shot to death later in the day in a downtown Nashville condominium.
McNair was found dead on a sofa in the living room, with Kazemi close to him on the floor.
Police weren't willing to characterize the deaths as a murder-suicide.
"While it's clear that Steve McNair's death is a homicide as a result of being shot four times, the police department is not yet classifying Ms. Kazemi's death," said Don Aaron of the Metro Nashville police.
Aaron said Kazemi was shot in the side of the head.
"I would expect it would be a number of days before the classification is placed on Ms. Kazemi's death," he said.
Police said Sunday the shots fired came from the pistol they recovered at the scene and that there were no signs of forced entry.
Kazemi, who reportedly was known as Jenny to friends, was pulled over on Thursday while driving a 2007 Escalade registered to her and McNair. She was arrested on a DUI charge, and he was allowed to leave in a taxi.
An arrest affidavit from Thursday said Kazemi had bloodshot eyes and alcohol on her breath when she was pulled over, but refused a breathalyzer test, saying "she was not drunk, she was high."
McNair and Kazemi apparently knew each other from a restaurant the quarterback and his family frequented, but workers there wouldn't talk about their relationship.
Police on Sunday described it as a "dating relationship for the past several months."
Nothing ruled out
McNair, the father of four children, was married. Nolan earlier in the day said McNair's wife, Mechelle, was "very distraught."
The bodies were discovered by Wayne Neeley, a longtime friend of McNair who was also renting the condo. Neeley told authorities he went into the condo, saw McNair and Kazemi, but walked first into the kitchen before going back into the living room.
Neeley then called a friend, who alerted authorities just after 1:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
McNair and his family frequented the restaurant where Kazemi was a waitress, according to employees and patrons of Dave & Buster's in Nashville. Keith Norfleet, Kazemi's ex-boyfriend, told the Tennessean newspaper that McNair and Kazemi met at the restaurant.
"She was reliable 90 per cent of the time," manager Chris Truelove said of Kazemi. "She was pretty outgoing. A lot of the guests liked being around her, and she liked being around the guests."
In June, McNair opened a restaurant near the Tennessee State University campus. It was closed Saturday evening, but had become a small memorial, where flowers, candles and notes had been placed outside the door.
McNair spent 13 seasons in the NFL, leading the Tennessee Titans to the Super Bowl in 2000, where they fell just a yard short on a last-minute play against the St. Louis Rams.
He was named co-MVP of the NFL with fellow quarterback Peyton Manning, following a sterling 2003 season in which he threw for over 3,200 yards and 24 touchdowns, with just seven interceptions.
For his career, McNair threw for 31,304 yards and 174 touchdowns, with 119 interceptions. He also ran for 3,590 yards with 37 rushing touchdowns.
