The Calgary Stampeders confirmed on Friday that quarterback Henry Burris has been given a contract extension that runs through the 2012 season.

Burris, 34, had hinted on his website late Thursday that he was signing a four-year deal.

Burris is coming off a year filled with accolades and the Grey Cup title. He threw for 5,093 yards and 39 touchdowns to earn the nomination as the West division's most outstanding player.

“I’m so happy to be staying in Calgary,” said Burris. “This is the only team I can imagine playing for and I love the direction we’re heading. I look forward to building on 2008 and we all have great ambitions for the future."

Burris has thrown for 142 touchdowns and over 18,000 passing yards in the last five CFL seasons, and in the past two seasons has gained a total of over 1,200 yards rushing.

He debuted in the CFL with Calgary in 1998 and came back to the city in 2005 after three seasons with Saskatchewan.

"Henry has proven that he’s an elite quarterback in this league and a vital part of our football team,” said head coach/general manager John Hufnagel. “He’s also a tremendous representative in the community and we’re ecstatic to know he’ll be here for years to come.”

Calgary will host Montreal in a Grey Cup rematch on Canada Day to kick off the regular season for both clubs.
