"I'm ecstatic to be back," Carpenter said in a news release. "I had several options to consider, but ultimately I wanted to stay in Calgary and I was glad that they wanted me back."
Carpenter played in all 18 regular-season games, the West final and the Grey Cup during the 2008 CFL campaign, recording 35 tackles, two interceptions, one quarterback sack and two forced fumbles.
He also ranked second on the team with 17 special-teams tackles, and added one tackle for a loss and five pass knockdowns.
The 2009 season will be his third with the Stampeders.
"We're happy to have Dwaine back with the Stampeders," said head coach and general manager John Hufnagel.
"He's a versatile player who can play numerous positions, and brings veteran leadership and experience to our locker-room."
