(Rich Schultz/Associated Press) New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress was released from hospital on Saturday afternoon after being accidentally shot in the leg at a nightclub.
ESPN.com and NFL.com, citing anonymous sources, reported that a gun Burress was carrying accidentally went off.
The Giants would not confirm that but in a statement said the player had been released. The team said Burress would not play Sunday against Washington.
"We have been in contact with Plaxico since shortly after the incident," the statement read. "Plaxico suffered a wound to his right thigh. Obviously, our primary concern is for Plaxico's health and well-being, and given the circumstances, we are relieved to say he was released from a New York City hospital at approximately 2 p.m. today."
Burress, 31, caught the winning pass in the team's Super Bowl victory in February and signed a lucrative contract on the eve of this season, which has proven tumultuous.
He was suspended for a game and fined $117,500 US for missing a team meeting earlier in the season. He was also fined $45,000 by the NFL for abuse of an official in a game against San Francisco.
Burress has been hampered by a hamstring injury and has caught 35 passes through 10 games, off the pace he has set over the past seven seasons with New York and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
