Quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots has confirmed there was a complication after his recent major knee surgery.

Brady, in a posting on his website late Saturday, said he went through a second procedure this week to deal with an infection in the left knee. It had been reported in the Boston media but not confirmed by the team.

"The infection is very treatable and, through a course of antibiotics, it will be knocked out of my system," Brady said.

"We were proactive with the infection and the doctors went in for a second procedure this past Wednesday to clean and to test the wound. The results of the tests have all been positive and we are very thankful."

Brady, the most valuable player in the NFL last season with a record 50 touchdown passes, was felled just 7½ minutes into the season.

Kansas City safety Bernard Pollard rolled over into the quarterback's left knee. Brady tore the anterior cruciate ligaments in the knee, but is expected to be healthy in time for next season.

New England (3-2) have turned to Matt Cassel in Brady's absence. The Patriots play a home game Monday night against Denver.
