Former NFL running back Travis Henry is being held in connection with an alleged drug deal in a Denver suburb.

Henry, 29, was being held pending charges after an alleged "multi-kilogram cocaine transaction" according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Rocky Mountain division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

It is the latest, and potentially most serious, problem for Henry, who was released in June by his third NFL team, the Denver Broncos.

"He's just too inconsistent as a person," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said at the time. "When you're too inconsistent as a person, you usually aren't going to win championships. I'm not going to get into details what he did do or didn't do."

Denver released the player 15 months after he was signed to a five-year contract worth $22.5 million US following stints with Tennessee and Buffalo. Henry gained 691 yards and just four touchdowns in his lone season with the Broncos.

He totalled 6,086 yards and 38 touchdowns in seven NFL seasons.

Henry was threatened last year with a one-year NFL suspension for a third violation of the league's substance abuse policy but successfully challenged the ban over issues with the testing of urine samples.

Fathered nine children

After his release, the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post reported that Henry tested positive for marijuana again in May.

A child paternity lawsuit in Georgia last year revealed Henry has fathered nine children by nine women located in four different states.

While playing with the Buffalo Bills in 2001, Henry was sentenced to community service after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of attempted sexual misconduct involving a 15-year-old girl.

The sentence came after it was heard that two girls approached Henry at a Buffalo gas station, and that teen told Henry she was almost 18.

The DEA statement indicated that Henry and James Mack were arrested Tuesday in the suburb of Centennial, Colo. Both are being held pending charges.
