New Orleans head coach Sean Payton will remain under contract with the Saints until the end of the 2012 season. (Michael Conroy/Associated Press)The New Orleans Saints signed head coach Sean Payton to a three-year contract extension on Sunday.
Financial details of the deal were not released.
Payton was already signed through 2009, but the new contract, which was announced prior to the Saints' road game against the Washington Redskins, ties him to the NFL club to the end of the 2012 season.
"I'm grateful to the Saints and the Benson family for that opportunity and the confidence they have in myself," Payton said following Sunday's 29-24 loss to the Washington Redskins. "And we're going to work our tail off to bring a championship to this city, but we've got a lot of work to do."
Payton is currently is his third season as coach of the Saints.
The team sports a 17-15 record the last two seasons under Peyton, and reached the NFC championship game in 2006.
"I love his style of offence and I love his aggressiveness and just his leadership," quarterback Drew Brees said. "All those things that you want in a head coach, he's got it. He's played the quarterback position before, so I just felt like we were right there on the same page with everything, so he was a big part of why I came to New Orleans."
Sunday's loss dropped the Saints record to 1-1 on the season. New Orleans won its season opener by beating Tampa Bay 24-20 last week.
