Kicker Jay Feely was released on Tuesday after just one season with the Miami Dolphins.

Feely, 32, was let go despite setting a franchise record for field goal percentage in 2007. Feely made 21 of 23 field goals last season and led the Dolphins with 89 points.

But new vice-president of football operations Bill Parcells said before training camp that Feely would have to compete for the job.

"I talked about it this summer with all of my family,'' Feely told the Miami Herald on Tuesday. "I had a feeling from the day Parcells got hired that this was going to be the case.''

Feely is one of several veterans Parcells has jettisoned after the team finished 1-15 in 2007.

The kicker said he believed Parcells didn't take too kindly to his pursuits off the field. Much like defensive lineman Jason Taylor, who was traded to Washington, Feely has done broadcasting work and started to pursue interests beyond the football field.

Rookie kicker Dan Carpenter, from Montana, made kicks of 41 and 49 yards in Miami's 17-6 loss to Tampa Bay last week in preseason action.

Feely has also kicked for the Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants in his seven years in the NFL.

He has made 177 of 219 kicks for a percentage of 80.8, achieving a career best 148 points with New York in 2005. The University of Michigan product has missed just two extra points in his NFL career.
