Baltimore Ravens

Dumervil has spurred the Denver Broncos for Baltimore, agreeing to a five-year deal, Ravens general manger Ozzie Newsome announced Sunday.

Dumervil, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, is expected to be in Baltimore Tuesday to take his physical and sign the paperwork. Broncos football operations chief John Elway issued a statement Sunday saying the Broncos "worked diligently over the last week" to re-sign Dumervil but "are now moving forward without him."

The Denver Broncos are set to talk with free agent pass rushers Dwight Freeney and John Abraham on Thursday, 48 hours after they submitted a new contract proposal to Dumervil.

Freeney, 33, and Abraham, 34, are both older and less productive than Dumervil, 29, but might make financial sense for the Broncos, who had to cut Dumervil last week to avoid paying him $12 million in 2013. Dumervil's then-agent Marty Magid and the Broncos renegotiated a three-year, $30 million deal Friday that included an $8 million 2013 salary, but the paperwork didn't get done in time.

Dumervil has parted ways with his agent after a paperwork mix-up forced the Denver Broncos to waive him instead of signing him to an $8 million contract.

Dumervil and the Broncos had come to an agreement Friday for the defensive lineman to take a $4 million pay cut. But Dumervil's agent, Marty Magid, didn't fax the signed contract to the Broncos in time to meet Friday's 1:59 p.m. deadline and the Broncos cut Dumervil so they wouldn't be on the hook for the $12 million they owed him in the original contract.

Dumervil found himself out of a job and the Broncos were without their best defensive end Friday afternoon after they reached an agreement on a new contract, but saw it all come undone when tardy filing of the paperwork forced Denver to release him.

A wild set of events that was a fiasco involving John Elway caused Dumervil to not join the Broncos. Dumervil is now a free agent, dumped late onto a market where one top defensive end, Cliff Avril, just signed a two-year deal with Seattle worth an average of $7.5 million a year. Dumervil was second on the Broncos with 11 sacks last season. He led the league with 17 in 2009 and received a six-year, $61.5 million contract in 2010.

The Denver Broncos are asking Dumervil to take a pay cut so they can create more salary cap room for free agency.

Dumervil signed a six-year, $61.5 million contract in 2010. He's scheduled to make $12 million in 2013. The team wants him to take a cut or restructure his contract, according to a person familiar with the situation, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details of the negotiations were not public.
