Commonwealth Stadium

Home of the 90th Grey Cup game, Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium is no stranger to staging world-class sporting events.

Built to host the 1978 Commonwealth Games, it was the birthplace of the greatest dynasty in CFL history as the Eskimos captured five consecutive Grey Cup championships from 1978 to 1982.

Located minutes from downtown Edmonton, Commonwealth Stadium boasts a seating capacity of over 60,000 people and is the crown jewel of Canadian sports venues. It remains the only major sporting facility in Canada with natural grass and is considered one of the premier playing surfaces in North America.

This year marks the third time Commonwealth Stadium will house the CFL's marquee game.

In 1984, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers walloped the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 47-17 before 60,081 onlookers.

Thirteen years later, the Toronto Argonauts thumped the Saskatchewan Roughriders 47-23 with 60,431 spectators in the stands.

Aside from the Grey Cup, Commonwealth Stadium welcomed young athletes from around the world in 1978 for the Commonwealth Games and in 1983 for the first North American held World University Games.

On June 5, 1994, Canada's national soccer team pulled off one of the most amazing results in its history, holding the powerful Brazilians to a shocking 1-1 tie.

This past September, Commonwealth hosted the inaugural FIFA Under-19 Women's World Championships. Playing in front of huge crowds, Canada breezed through the opening round and into the semifinal, where they defeated Brazil before 40,000 fans. Canada capped off its amazing run by winning the silver medal after succumbing to the United States in the final before close to 50, 000 spectators.

As well as housing world-class sporting events, Commonwealth Stadium has welcomed some of the biggest international recording stars in the world, including David Bowie, Willie Nelson, Genesis, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones.
