Quarterback Buck Pierce, who led the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to an important win over the Grey Cup-champion Montreal Alouettes, was named the CFL's offensive player of the week Tuesday.

Pierce was 20-of-29 passing for 312 yards and two touchdowns in Winnipeg's 25-23 win over Montreal. The victory moved the Blue Bombers four points ahead of the second-place Alouettes in the East Division standings.

Saskatchewan defensive back Chris McKenzie was named the top defensive player. He returned an interception 33 yards in the Riders' 30-20 home win over the Toronto Argonauts and also had three tackles and a sack.

Toronto kicker Noel Prefontaine was named the top special-teams player for the second time this season. Prefontaine booted four field goals and sported a 41.4-yard average on seven punts against Saskatchewan and also had a 39-yard completion to Jeremy Unertl on a fake punt.

Edmonton tailback Jerome Messam took home top Canadian honours for the third time this year. The Toronto native, who grew up in Brampton, Ont., ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns in the Eskimos' 38-23 win over Hamilton.
