A day after he wowed judges with his short program, Japan's Nobunari Oda was tops in the free skate and took home the gold on Saturday at the Cup of China in Beijing.

Oda had a combined score of 239.58 to edge American Evan Lysacek, who used a second-place finish in the free skate to take silver with 232.17.

"I am happy to keep this place, but I am very disappointed with my performance tonight," Oda said. "I didn't even attempt the quad, so I still have a lot more progress to be made in my jumping for future competitions."

Rounding out the podium was Sergei Voronov of Russia with a third-place finish in the free skate to drop a spot with a combined score of 220.39.

Canadian Kevin Reynolds placed seventh in the free skate to rise to an eighth-place finish with 188.47.
