European champion Florent Amodio of France will be sent home from Japan where he was training ahead of the upcoming figure skating world championships following the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The French ice skating federation said Saturday that Amodio, who is currently training in Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu, will return home "as a precautionary measure."

A powerful tsunami spawned by the largest earthquake in Japan's recorded history slammed the country's eastern coast on Friday.

The International Skating Union said the world championships in Tokyo will go ahead as scheduled on March 21 after the venue escaped damage in the earthquake.
