"It was my first competition at that level. It was major. It was my first time competing with a multi-sport event and that was incredibly exciting.

"We got our uniform ahead of time and I was such a little person. I just remember putting this Hudson Bay jacket and hat on and swimming around in the thing. My parents took photographs of me going to the airport, I was living at Penetanguishene at the time. We left at four or five in the morning. But I wasn't nervous or scared, just horribly excited.

"I just kind of went out and did my job and ultimately I won, which was exciting. It was a good sign. You could sort of detect the competitive instinct in me at a young age and competing at a high level and seeing those signs was probably a good thing. I'm sure my coach was quite relieved."
