Gayle Annett's rink scored an eight-ender at a bonspiel in Chatham on Dec. 5. It's a feat so rare the odds of scoring one are nearly impossible to know.
"I did not see it coming," said Annet. "I was stunned. It’s the only way to describe it."
Annett has been curling for more than 30 years and never witnessed an eight-ender.
The Ontario Curling Association's website reports there have been 74 eight-enders accomplished among the thousands of sanctioned games played during the last two years.
The high-scoring feat is so rare, Ford of Canada used to run the "Eight-Ender Program" and register each one and then reward Canadian rinks who scored eight points in one end.
Annett's rink scored its eight points in the third end of their second game of the bonspiel, which they didn't win. Not that it mattered to Annett.
"We’ve had our share of wins all over the place over the years. This was overwhelming," Annett said.
Gail Grosjean is Annett's vice, has been curling for 25 years and has never seen an eight-ender, much less be part of one.
"I was just astounded," she said."Fortunately, we took pictures of it."
Anne Matassa and Sandy Bell round out the rink. Annett said the entire team deserves credit.
"When you curl it’s a total team effort," Annett said. "These other three gals are superb."
An eight-ender ranks with some other improbabilities in sports and life.
