Jennifer Jones, right, delivers a shot Wednesday at the worlds. (Frank Gunn/Canadian Press)Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones squandered a chance to clinch a playoff spot Tuesday afternoon at the world women's curling championship as Denmark's Angelina Jensen rallied for a 7-5 win over the Canadian skip.
Jones, the defending champion, looked to be in good shape heading into the ninth end with a 5-3 lead in the Draw 13 contest in Gangneung, South Korea.
At that point, Jensen had not scored more than a single point in any end, but she notched two and stole another pair in the 10th to hand Jones her second loss in three games.
Jones faced a tricky angle raise for the win, but she hit the stone too thin and the rock went spinning out of the house to give Denmark the victory.
The missed shot was a reversal for Jones, who earlier in the day made a deft double-takeout and drew to the button on consecutive shots in the 10th end to eke out a 7-6 win over South Korea's Mi-Yeon Kim in Draw 12.
"We have to play better," Jones said after the loss to Denmark. "We're making some big shots, we're just not as consistent as we'd like to be."
Jensen's win briefly moved her into sole possession of second place, but she later dropped into a tie with Jones at 7-2 after losing to South Korea's Kim in the evening draw.
China's Bingyu Wang tops the standings at 8-1 and can finish no worse than third after pounding Germany 8-2 in Draw 13.
Sweden's Anette Norberg seized sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot at 6-3 by beating Switzerland's Mirjam Ott 8-6 in Draw 14. Ott's record fell to at 5-4.
Germany's Andrea Schopp bounced back from her afternoon loss to Wang to edge Scotland's Eve Muirhead 7-6. Both skips are part of a four-way tie for sixth at 4-5 along with Russia and the U.S.
Norway's Marianne Roervik picked up her first win of the tournament by beating Italy's Diana Gaspari 8-6. Both women are 1-8.
