This year's Canadian Open of Curling final will be a battle of Edmonton.
Top-ranked Kevin Martin of Edmonton defeated Masters of Curling champion Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., 5-3 in the semifinals Saturday night at Winnipeg's MTS Centre. Randy Ferbey defeated fellow Edmontonian Kevin Koe 7-5 in the other semifinal of the $100,000 tournament.
Martin and Ferbey will meet in Sunday's final (CBC, 1 p.m. ET). Both rinks posted 6-1 records during the round robin.
"We didn't come out of the chute real quick.… We were in big trouble the first few ends, but we locked a few freezes in there, and we escaped early. It was a good game in the end," Martin told CBC Sports.
Defending champion Jeff Stoughton of Manitoba, who posted a 5-0 record in the round robin, lost to Koe in Saturday evening's quarter-finals.
Martin stole one in the first, second and third ends to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Howard bounced back with a hit and stick for two in the fourth, but Martin drew for one in the next end to sit on a 4-2 lead.
After Howard pulled one back in the sixth, Martin added singles in each of the next two ends to wrap up the victory.
Ferbey, a six-time Brier winner, lost to Howard in the finals of the Masters of Curling tournament last month.
Ferbey's rink stole three in the third end after one of Koe's rocks picked.
"That was the turning point of the game. These things happen and it's unfortunate they do, but thank God we were on the side of that one," said Ferbey.
