Stanley Cup-winning goalie Annti Niemi has decided to take the Chicago Blackhawks to salary arbitration. He was among 31 players who filed before Monday's deadline to go through what can be an unpleasant experience for both the club and the player as each side debates what they feel the player is worth.
Niemi, who turns 27 on Aug. 29, made $826,875 U.S. last season. Other intriguing battles that could take place are Ian White and the Calgary Flames, the Vancouver Canucks and Mason Raymond as well as Matt Moulson and the New York Islanders.
Moulson reached the 30-goal plateau in his first full NHL season. White scored a career-high 13 goals and 38 points in a combined 83 games for the Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs. The 24-year-old Raymond had a breakout season with 25 goals.
The arbitration hearings will take place in Toronto between on July 20 and Aug. 4. But just because a player appears on the list below doesn't mean that he and his club can't work out a deal prior to the scheduled hearing.
