The standings obsession
Mike Milbury has an obsession with following the standings, and the way he sees it, the Western Conference race has whittled down to three teams battling for two spots, and none of them is Calgary.

Time is now for GMs to step up on player safety
A couple of times each year, the NHL's general managers meet to discuss pertinent business. There is never enough time to thoroughly discuss the issues presented to them by the league. Maybe this time they can clear the slate of issues, save for the one that has been debated throughout the hockey world this past week: player safety.

Chara ruling no easy decision
Who would want to be placed in Mike Murphy's shoes? The ruling on the hit by Zdeno Chara on Max Pacioretty was left to Mike Murphy, as the NHL's regular disciplinarian, Colin Campbell, recuses himself from decisions involving his son's team. But Murphy, the league's senior vice president of hockey operations, is an old pro in many ways. So, it is no surprise that Murphy got this call right. And it was no easy task.

Bruins don't look like contenders right now
The Boston Bruins were riding high after flexing their muscles in a pair of wins earlier in the month, but three straight losses have humbled the team battling with Montreal for the Northeast Division lead.

The Thornton Effect
Whether he has spiked the Gatorade or put pepper in the chowdah, the entire Boston Bruins club seems to have ingested a huge dose of testosterone thanks to tough guy Shawn Thornton.

Warm and fuzzy stories
I am often portrayed as the grumpy old guy who only wants to see more physical play and less wimpification of the game. While those characterizations may be true, my glass seems more full than empty today. Here are three reasons why:

Horton, Savard hold key to Bruins' playoff success
After a start that relied solely on the amazing performances of Tim Thomas to bail them out, the Bruins have begun to gel.The team's goaltending, defence and forward units all look solid, but Boston needs its two best offensive weapons firing on all cylinders in order to win in April.

Wings, concussion mania influenced suspension
I believe Colin Campbell made the made the decision to suspend Calgary's Tom Kostopoulos six games after being influenced by Detroit and by the climate of concussion mania in which we now reside.

Winter Classic met every expectation
I am still revelling in the spectacle that was the Winter Classic in Pittsburgh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know the Canadian junior team lost a heartbreaker Wednesday to the Russians, but that is not getting in my kitchen. The great effort by the Canadians and gutsier game by the Russians should be an event that is long remembered in that tournament's history. But, I am not on that bandwagon.

Black ice and the days of pond hockey
There are so many people taking credit for creating the Winter and Heritage Classics that it is difficult to know where to give credit, but here's a big "Thank You" to whomever is responsible. The Winter Classic has become an event. It celebrates our sport on a day where the television audience is amazing. The TV suits tell me people watch the game in numbers short only of the Super Bowl.

Capitals' sudden nosedive cause for concern
Two weeks ago, I wrote a blog about the emergence of new attitude in the Washington Capitals' locker-room. There seemed a trend to unselfish play, a goalie tandem that had promise and an organization that was being appropriately self-critical. All good things, right? Good signs for the near and long-term future, right? Not so fast, Kowalski.

Capitals finally getting it?
The Great 8 of the Washington Capitals is 0-for-8. As in no goals in eight games. And this is a good thing? Yup. Washington continues to roll over its opponents with a startling array of offensive weapons. Nothing new there, but it is new that Ovechkin isn't the one lighting the lamp.

I'm sorry, so sorry
I'm sorry, so sorry. It's Brenda Lee tune for those old enough to remember. Or maybe not since I am old enough to forget. Anyway, the song title works for the purposes of this week's blog.

True captains lead with or without embroidery
Let's get this straight. I understand the ritual of naming a captain. He becomes a go-to guy for the media and he gets to talk first at all the team functions. Sure, you want a good guy who usually works hard and doesn't rock the boat. That doesn't compute to leadership.

Red Wings' work ethic unparalleled
As I parked my keister on the sofa, I tuned into the lone remaining game on the NHL schedule: the Red Wings visiting Calgary. Before I even swallowed my first cashew, the Wings had grabbed my attention for one singular reason.

Kessel containment strategy will catch on
The Toronto Maple Leafs have given their fans more hope this month than all of last year. The name of the game, however, is to score goals and, as most expected, it will be the most difficult challenge they face.

A little mercy for Rypien, please
Rick Rypien will pay a heavy price for shoving a Minnesota fan and the league is right to enforce their policy, but have a little mercy for the Canucks forward because the situation could have been prevented.

Early season 3 Up/3 Down
It's way too early to get excited about anyone or anything as the NHL season begins. Or is it? For fans of three teams, it's really time to pay a little closer attention, while for supporters of three others, well, it might be time to worry.
