NHL sets high standard of enforcement
Brendan Shanahan is going to find out quickly that the job he now occupies as Senior VP in charge of player safety is not a lot of fun.

We were the benefactors of great stupidity
The game was changed forever on August 9, 1988 when Wayne Gretzky was traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings. At the time I was a goaltender for the L.A. Kings and could not believe that the unthinkable had happened, and that we were the benefactors of such stupidity.

Tip for all-star captains: Pick for "intangibles"
Trying to dress up the NHL All-Star Game can be, at times, like putting makeup on a pig. The game is what it is.

The most important man to the Winter Classic
"'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring not even a mouse."That was the case in Dan Craig's house on the 24th of December. Who might you ask is Dan Craig? At this moment, Dan Craig is the most important person to the jewel we call the Winter Classic (Jan. 1, CBC, CBCSports.ca, 1 p.m. ET). He is the best icemaker on the planet and is under the most trying of all Winter Classic circumstances in order to get a sheet of ice ready for the players to perform.

2 Cups in a row an impossible task
The Chicago Blackhawks sit three games over .500 at just past the quarter pole of the year. Was this not the best team on the planet last year? The reason for the mediocre start is the current hockey system and the fact that they were so good last year. What does last year have to do with the start this year? Let me explain.

Stamkos example is for Hall to follow
As I watch the early struggles of Edmonton's Taylor Hall it reminds me so much of another first to be called to the podium player by the name of Steven Stamkos. Let's take a look back at how the Stamkos era began in Tampa Bay.

Fans on losing end of pre-season cash grab
As training camps come to a close and the regular season begins there is a troubling issue that stands out for me.

Things have to change before NHL goes to Sochi
The debate over whether National Hockey League players will participate in the 2014 Olympics in Russia is years away. After taking the past few weeks to digest the power and success of the Olympic Games in Vancouver, there are a couple of critical points that have to be addressed before the NHL and the NHLPA decide that it is the right decision to compete in the games.

Cap issues forced Phaneuf out of Calgary
Let's call a spade a shovel with regard to the Dion Phaneuf trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Phaneuf is a cap casualty of the new system that was crafted by the NHL and NHLPA in 2004. It is hard to believe that a stud of a defenceman who was penciled in for Team Canada, who was a finalist for the Norris Trophy as the league's top blue-liner, could have been discarded because of the difficult month of January that the Calgary Flames and their fans have endured. It's human nature to try to figure out what is wrong with Dion.

Hidden gem emerges from Crosby draft
The 2005 NHL entry draft was not the norm for draft day. It was more like a coronation. Professional hockey was coming out of its year-long lockout and the saviour to our sport was about to be picked by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

More than talent behind Brodeur's storied career
As I began my NHL career in 1985, Terry Sawchuk’s record for career shutouts was one hallmark I thought was untouchable. During the last season of my career with the Leafs I certainly knew that my 13 career shutouts were not causing the Sawchuk family any worry, but who would have ever thought that the legendary netminder's 103 shutouts would be surpassed by a kid by the name of Marty Brodeur? The problem for all the future goalies is Brodeur is still in the prime of his career. In other words, when he finishes playing, his record is definitely untouchable.

Before they were hall of famers
On Monday night, two of my former teammates and great friends will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. I am really proud of the accomplishments of both Brian Leetch and Luc Robitaille. Although they will reach the finish line together and be inducted into the hall on the same night, it was drastically different at the start for both players. In those early days I never dreamed they would receive this great honour on the same night.

Get the points now before the Olympics come to town
Is it too early to declare a Saturday night game in October a must win? Well, as the Toronto Maple Leafs pull into town for a 7 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. PT tilt on Saturday, I will declare that it’s not a must win for the Leafs, instead it’s the Canucks that must put two points in the kitty. I make this declaration not based on the fact that it’s the winless Leafs coming to town, but based on a number of issues that may bite Vancouver in the derriere down the road.

Hockey Fights Cancer can get even stronger
I want to give a standing ovation to the NHL and its players for creating Hockey Fights Cancer in December of 1998.
