A 'fresh' start in December
December 9, 2009 10:01 AM | Posted by Jennifer BotterillThirty-seven games into our season already, and the month of December brings us new challenges and opportunities to face. With -25C weather around us, and plenty of bright winter snow, the days seem to fall appropriately into the extremely ‘fresh’ category.
Our journey started as a group of 26 girls, and the coaches have faced some extremely difficult choices, as our group has been made smaller. There are still some tough decisions to be made before the final Olympic roster is announced because the depth on our team is better than ever. Each decision is a tough one for the group as we have all been striving for excellence together.
This process is one that can be demanding. Upon reflection, I find myself thinking of how to make the most of each day.
This past week, we have played a game every other evening, and with skates and training in between our games, we continue to push ourselves. It's something we should all be proud of. All of us could think of how to behave each day to feel proud.
Feeling this way was a good reminder of some lessons I learned a while ago – I was once told to think about how I wanted to feel at the end of a journey. Thinking about this journey towards Vancouver, it reminded me to bring my personal best as often as I possibly can. No matter what the situation is, or how tough the training is, it is key to try to remain true to yourself. It is also part of bringing out the best of yourself and others.
People in all situations may like to consider that thought. There are going to be days where you are tired, and some days when you feel super! Even with a busy schedule, it can be the little things that make the biggest difference.
If we get too caught up in events beyond our control, or worry about those things, we can lose our perspective. Taking a deep breath can be very helpful to stay centered. In my experience, being positive, bringing energy to others, and believing in your dreams and goals helps me be my best.
I was reminded of another good line while watching a movie on a rare evening off for us. It was a parent talking to their kids about feeling proud. My parents always told me that I should be proud of myself. That seems to make sense. I strive to play, and behave in a way that I am proud of – each and every day.
Another fresh reminder came to me as I was watching the sports hall of fame inductions the other night. Angela James – an icon in women’s hockey – was inducted. She did a tremendous amount for the game and had a wonderful quote in her acceptance speech. She spoke of heart. She said that was something that set Canadian athletes apart. We play from our hearts.
As this fresh month of December continues – we have some exciting steps ahead! We are off to Denver in a couple of days to play the USA. We then return home to Calgary where we will once again be playing the USA at the Saddledome. Playing in our home country is always a special experience.
Our team will play to make everyone proud – and we will play from our hearts each time we hit the ice.
