Oilers in need of shakeup? Plus 30 thoughts

Monday, November 30, 2009 | 05:03 PM ET

Each week, Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman brings you his take on the world of sports.

Number one Twitter question to the @FriedmanHNIC account in the last 24 hours? Some variation of: “Should the Oilers blow it up and start over?”

Well, in theory, the answer is yes. With a battered lineup and steep climb, it makes sense to gut your roster and go for a high pick. The high pick may happen, but the gutting will be very difficult.

Offside: Fixing Canadian soccer - Governance

Monday, November 30, 2009 | 02:58 PM ET

Of all the feedback I received in the last six months surrounding the state of soccer in Canada, the most heated centred on the Canadian Soccer Association's Board of Directors.

Most fans in Canada believe that the CSA’s board is out of touch with the game in our country and that its sole purpose is to maintain the status quo.

It is not difficult to come to that conclusion, as the board is a vague group of individuals who are rarely given any publicity.

Who better to vent your frustrations on than those who choose not to respond?

The mind: My friend, my enemy

Sunday, November 29, 2009 | 01:23 PM ET

I wake up in Colorado once again.

It seems like summer and fall were almost non-existent. I am at altitude and can feel the low oxygen content in every breath. I am waiting for the pipe to open and excitement to begin.

The support behind the emotion

Friday, November 27, 2009 | 01:06 PM ET

Emotions too deep for words. That’s what I’ve been feeling this week, an overwhelming sense of home, community, and support.

I’m writing this from home in Prince Edward Island. No, it’s not a vacation. We were sent home for a few days while our sleds were being shipped to Europe for the next batch of races.

Standing up against hatred

Friday, November 27, 2009 | 01:00 PM ET

This week John Buccigross from ESPN wrote an incredible article about Brian Burke and his son Brendan.

Brendan is gay and told his family of his sexual orientation a couple of years ago, but until recently few people knew of this.

Nobody was surprised by Brian’s reaction, the same love and support for his son as always.

Opportunity beckons for Bute

Thursday, November 26, 2009 | 05:34 PM ET

Quebec fighter Lucian Bute may have been left off the dancecard for the Showtime super middleweight tournament, but he'll have a chance to forge his own path if he's successful in a rematch Saturday night against Librado Andrade.

It's a moderate-sized if. Bute is the favourite, and should be, but was literally out on his feet at the end of the first bout between the two men in October 2008. He outboxed the rugged Mexican Andrade impressively for the first 11 rounds but found himself gassed in the final round. Had the bout gone another 20 seconds even, he would have been done.

Kipper can't expect Olympic guarantee

Thursday, November 26, 2009 | 05:25 PM ET

Okay, so you are Jari Kurri, general manager of the Finnish Olympic team, what do you do?

Miikka Kiprusoff, certainly a leading candidate to be your starting goaltender in the 2010 Winter Olympics next February, has declared he will only play if he is, indeed, the starting goaltender.

So what do you do?

The magic of the Grey Cup

Thursday, November 26, 2009 | 02:48 PM ET

Many among the millions who will tune in to watch the 97th Grey Cup game on TV won’t know a single player’s name on either team prior to the kickoff.

But that’s not the point.
