NHL will take care of Gretzky

Friday, October 30, 2009 | 09:20 PM ET

Wayne Gretzky will not prevent the NHL from purchasing the Phoenix Coyotes, and the league wants him to know that it will do everything possible to repair their damaged relationship.

Gretzky had until Friday to file a motion challenging Jerry Moyes's agreement to sell the team back to the league. Defeated in his attempt to flip Phoenix to Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie, Moyes wanted to get out as quickly as possible now that the team must cut $2.6 million US worth of payroll cheques every two weeks. It is possible the NHL will take control on Monday.

A painful and embarrassing stretch for the NHLPA

Friday, October 30, 2009 | 03:44 PM ET

At first glance, it might seem the NHL Players Association is a train wreck waiting to happen. Or perhaps it is best put - a train wreck in progress.

Friday, October 30, 2009 | 03:39 PM ET

Okay, one month does not make a season, we all know that.

But history has shown that one month, the first month of the season, can have a profound impact on how the final month of the playoffs plays out.

Meaning, in recent years the championship teams have traditionally had a strong October, though the Pittsburgh Penguins interrupted that streak a year ago. For the previous dozen years, though, no Stanley Cup champion had an October win percentage lower than .636.

The new Mr. Hockey

Friday, October 30, 2009 | 12:25 PM ET

Thursday night I was working for NESN, the Boston-based station that carries the Bruins so my attention was focused on the B’s-Devils, but it was the out of town highlights that really stole the show.

A few good men step up for Canadian women's hockey

Thursday, October 29, 2009 | 01:54 PM ET

With the Olympic Games in Vancouver coming up in just over 100 days, I wanted to take the opportunity to recognize some great supporters of women’s hockey - a group of businessmen who have made a difference in the lives of 26 Canadian players.

It's time to embrace the flame

Thursday, October 29, 2009 | 11:27 AM ET

The Olympic flame is coming to Canada.

The longest torch relay in history will traverse a complex country and be exposed to the most diverse and multi-ethnic society on the face of the earth.

It’s time for the dissent to stop and for us to be gracious hosts.

NHL teams take caution in wake of H1N1

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 | 04:44 PM ET

Everyone take a deep breath.

It may not a vaccine for the H1N1 virus, but it is a good preventative for the hysteria building around it.

Now, no one should be taking the disease lightly, especially in wake of a 13-year-old hockey player in suburban Toronto succumbing to the virus earlier this week.

But overreaction accomplishes nothing, either.
