Big day for Annamay

Friday, July 31, 2009 | 03:48 PM ET

Just the other day Annamay Pierse had few words to describe how she felt after finishing fifth in the women’s 100-metre breaststroke final in Rome.

“Terrible,” was all she said. “Just terrible.”

This time it was a different story - totally the opposite reaction. She positively beamed following her silver medal in a longer race on a different day.

It's all about the suit

Swimming has a problem.

The new polyurethane suit, ubiquitous at the 13th world aquatic championships in Rome, is leading to a bevy of records, but it doesn’t fit when it comes to the true spirit of competition.

It's time to love Toronto FC

Monday, July 27, 2009 | 11:08 AM ET

One of the first things I ever learned about Toronto was that all Canadians, except Torontonians, despised the city. It’s so expensive, it has no spontaneity, it’s not very friendly, the public transit is unreliable, it’s choked by smog, the media is Toronto-centric – the list of moans and groans goes on and on.

And so it is with some trepidation I come to you this week with a simple appeal: Wherever you are across this vast country - give your love and support to Toronto.

Cotto-Pacquiao already creating buzz

Sunday, July 26, 2009 | 11:56 PM ET

Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto will meet on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas, it was announced last week, a legitimate superfight that has divided opinion among boxing fans.

Yes, online polls are unscientific, but the degree to which Pacquiao seems to be a favourite is a bit of a surprise. Canada's underwater dogs

Sunday, July 26, 2009 | 05:42 PM ET

The Canadian men’s water polo team is making a case for its place at the table at the World Aquatics Championships in Rome.

Toronto FC youngster seizes his chance

Thursday, July 23, 2009 | 12:55 AM ET

On this day two years ago, Toronto was abuzz with noise, colour and celebration as a packed BMO Field staged the final of the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Argentina's young guns, led by Sergio Aguero, Mauro Zarate and the diminutive Maxi Moralez, came from behind to beat a spirited and determined Czech Republic team with a dramatic late winner on a warm summer’s afternoon.

For some the tournament was a coming out party, a passport to European riches and soccer stardom.

For others it was anything but.
