Our quest for the Gold Cup begins

Monday, June 29, 2009 | 04:06 PM ET

Canadian national team goalkeeper Greg Sutton will be blogging for CBCSports.ca during the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which runs July 3-26 in the United States.

Well, we’re back at it again. Another camp begins in preparation for the Gold Cup. Me and 19 other players have come together to get ready for this exciting tournament that, for some teams, will run the entire month of July, and for others a week or two.

Our goal is to be playing in the final game, something we almost achieved two years ago and a feat that was accomplished in 2000, when our team brought home the trophy.

Molitor not happy, but a win's a win

Monday, June 29, 2009 | 11:41 AM ET

Steve Molitor was understandably not thrilled with his comeback performance, but he can be legitimately pleased with the way he closed the show.

Molitor (29-1, 11 knockouts) won a hard-fought split decision over Heriberto Ruiz on June 25 in Rama, Ont., his first bout since suffering his lone loss, a one-sided knockout.

Farewell South Africa, see you next year

Monday, June 29, 2009 | 09:30 AM ET

Farewell South Africa – thanks for having us. See you next year.

The finale was fitting. Had it been the World Cup Final it would have become an instant classic. Had I been watching it at home I wouldn’t have been able to tear myself away from the screen. It was first and foremost a great game of football which had everything – drama, controversy, and a cliff-hanging climax.

Babcock lives in NBA draft horror show

Friday, June 26, 2009 | 04:22 PM ET

On a day when other teams swung for the fences, the Toronto Raptors had to settle for what amounted to a bloop single.

At the NBA Draft Thursday evening, Toronto drafted DeMar DeRozan, a high-jumping athlete, who, after an uneventful one year of college elevated both literally and figuratively over the competition en route to an MVP award in the Pac-10 tournament.

A day in honour of the African child

Friday, June 26, 2009 | 02:42 PM ET

June 16 marked the International Day of the African Child and I was honoured to be involved in a fun-filled day of activities hosted by Right To Play here in Kampala.

The Day of the African Child was established in 1991 as a day to honour the hundreds of black school children who were shot dead or injured by the apartheid government in Soweto, South Africa on June 16, 1976 and throughout the weeks that followed.

The day has become a commemorative event for children all over Africa. It’s an opportunity to raise awareness for the struggles facing African children, most of whom still live in extreme poverty in which their basic needs are not being met.

A real No. 10 for Toronto FC?

Friday, June 26, 2009 | 02:24 PM ET

Jersey numbers are pretty much meaningless in modern day soccer. The current professional is merely a digit or two on the roster in terms of the number on his back.

‘Twas not always thus. Before the days of garish shirt sponsorship, surnames emblazoned across the shoulders, and endless design tweaks forcing the loyal fan to be a slave to fashion, shirt numbers actually meant something.

Bafana Bafana lacked finishing touch

Thursday, June 25, 2009 | 09:46 PM ET

Despite a valiant effort, South Africa was unable to pull off a second upset in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup, falling 1-0 to Brazil on Thursday.

A brilliant Dani Alves strike was all that separated the two sides at the end of 90 minutes. But more on that in a minute.

The Bafana Bafana very nearly followed up the USA's miraculous victory over top-ranked Spain with a shock victory all their own. That they didn't was more down to poor finishing rather than a particularly brilliant defensive display from Brazil.
