MMA on CBC?

Yup, it’s true.

CBC is now covering the fastest-growing sport in North America. I know we may be a little tardy in a mainstream sense getting here, but just think of us being "fashionably late." Not only will we be posting the results of all major MMA events but I’ll be blogging regularly here at CBCSports.ca. When MMA news happens we’ll have it up at CBCSports.ca alongside of our coverage of all the traditional sports you’ve become accustomed to.

We look forward to your feedback on all our stories, blogs, interviews and columns so start sending them in.

The news ... here are the results from UFC 96 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday night:

  • Quinton Jackson beat Keith Jardine by unanimous decision
  • Shane Carwin beat Gabriel Gonzaga by KO at 1:09 of the first round
  • Matt Brown beat Pete Sell by TKO at 1:32 of the first round
  • Matt Hamill beat Mark Munoz by KO at 3:53 of the first round
  • Gray Maynard beat Jim Miller by unanimous decision
  • Tamdan “Barn Cat” McCrory beat Ryan Madigan by TKO at 3:35 of the first round
  • Kendall Grove beat Canadian Jason Day by TKO at 1:32 of the first round
  • Jason Brilz beat Tim Boetsch by unanimous decision
  • Brandon Vera beat Mike Patt by TKO at 1:27 of the second round
  • Shane Nelson beat Aaron Riley by TKO at 0:44 of the first round

Notes: The crowd heavily booed the early stoppage of the Nelson/Riley fight ...former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz was in attendance at the show … best fight bonus ($60,000) went to Jackson and Jardine, Hamill earned best KO bonus (also $60,000) … as there were no submission finishes, no best submission bonus was awarded (duh) … it was generally understood that both Vera and Grove had to win or that would be it for them in the UFC … just a shade over 17,000 attended the event for a live gate of $1.3 million.

New date for Lesnar/Mir

The much-anticipated heavyweight rematch between UFC champion Brock Lesnar and interim champion Frank Mir was very much a topic of discussion this weekend in Columbus and in just about every MMA circle. Mir had arthroscopic knee surgery last week and appealed to UFC president Dana White to change the proposed date of the match because he wouldn't have enough time to train properly after going under the knife. The fight will now take place July 11 at UFC 100 in Las Vegas.

Evans waiting on Jackson decision

Quinton Jackson did Keith Jardine a favour of sorts Saturday night by handing him a decision loss at UFC 96. Jardine had refused to fight UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans (if he had won) as both are not only close friends, but also training partners.

Jackson will now face Evans in a fight scheduled for May 23 (after the Frank Mir/Brock Lesnar match was pushed back to July as mentioned above). If Jackson declines the fight - and most indications are that he will due to the quick turnaround - Lyoto Machida will take his spot.

Jackson will let UFC president Dana White know this week what his intentions are as he was planning a quick vacation after his strenuous camp preparing for the Jardine fight.

Quick work by Carwin

Shane Carwin looks ready to step up to main-event competition in the heavyweight division after his dominant performance over Gabriel Gonzaga Saturday night. Another first round KO for the 34-year-old former NCAA Division II wrestling champion, this one in 69 seconds. Carwin has dynamite in his hands.

Next up ...

The next UFC PPV (and yes, we’ll be all over it) is set for April 18 at the Bell Centre in Montreal headlined by UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva up against Thales Leitas and a light heavyweight match between Chuck Liddell and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
