Coyotes looking to deal defenceman Morris?

Saturday, February 28, 2009 | 11:50 PM ET

Phoenix defenceman Derek Morris has given the Coyotes a list of teams to which he would accept a trade, TSN reported Saturday.

According to ESPN.com, the Boston Bruins are among the teams that may be interested in the veteran, who is in the final year of a deal that pays him $3.95 million US this season.

Morris was scratched from Saturday's 3-1 home loss to the St. Louis Blues.

Guerin on his way off the Island?

Saturday, February 28, 2009 | 11:41 PM ET

Veteran Islanders forward Bill Guerin was yanked from the starting lineup after the warmup for Saturday night's home game against the Buffalo Sabres, fueling speculation that he may be traded.

New York's Newsday reported that the Islanders have a deal in place but need Guerin's approval because he has a no-movement clause in his contract.

What can save the Habs? How about a few cold ones

Saturday, February 28, 2009 | 08:46 PM ET

Someone throw me a life preserver. I'm drowning in a world of hate here in Montreal.

The Habs are struggling, their goalies can't stop a beach ball, coaches are under fire, numerous young players' off-ice activities have been a hot topic, Guy Lafleur has called out Bob Gainey, Gainey has called out Alex Kovalev, the power play stinks, it's still snowing, the team has only three wins in February, 11 players will be unrestricted free agents, Saku Koivu's captaincy is an issue (again).... blah, blah, blah.

I'm tired of discussing all the Canadiens' problems over the last month. I'm tired of being asked if I know anything about the team's dilemmas. I'm tired of being questioned about the reasons why the team is struggling so badly in its centennial season.

I have no answers. But I might have some solutions.

Time for Canadiens to circle wagons

Saturday, February 28, 2009 | 07:18 PM ET

With everything going on in Montreal, it's easy to forget that this team was a popular pre-season pick to win the Eastern Conference.

The centennial season was supposed to be a celebration of the team's class, pride and excellence. So, far only the marketing team has lived up to expectations.

For the love of powder

Friday, February 27, 2009 | 04:33 PM ET

I always feel so lucky to be a part of a multifaceted sport. I love riding the half pipe and learning new tricks and then bringing them to competition where I can showcase them. However the best aspect of riding is the time off where I can go riding with my friends.

I came back to Colorado this week after a long stretch of competitions where I learned a lot about myself and had a ton of fun. Nevertheless, after the Canadian Open and the Cypress and Quebec World Cup I definitely needed a break. I was told it had been snowing here in Silverthorne, so I took advantage of my break from competitions and booked a ticket to the United States. It started snowing the night I arrived and has continued for the past four days.

On the first day at Copper Mountain Resort there was a fresh 20cm of glistening white snow on the ground and clear blue skies above. The snow was taunting me, asking me to slash it with my board.

A break before the playoff drive

Friday, February 27, 2009 | 04:07 PM ET

As I’ve mentioned before, there are periods when NHL players need a break. The same goes for broadcasters (at least I do) to recharge our engines for the playoff push and the grind of the playoffs.

Last year at this time, Donna (my wife) and I snuck away to a little piece of heaven on Vancouver Island called Tofino.

This past week for our annual getaway we drove a couple of hours from our home in Calgary (through whiteout conditions because of a raging blizzard) to picturesque Lake Louise, or as it’s commonly referred to, a “gem in the Canadian Rockies”.

Gainey juggling many balls for Canadiens

Friday, February 27, 2009 | 09:22 AM ET

There is never a dull moment when discussion turns to the Montreal Canadiens — a team looking to make more changes as the NHL's trade deadline nears.

Whether he's dealing with an enigmatic veteran, or concerned over other players recently linked to a man arrested in an organized crime investigation, general manager Bob Gainey has little time to catch his breath.

With their options closing and a post-season appearance still in doubt, the Canadiens are definitely on the buyer's side of the hockey market in preparation for Wednesday's deadline.

Keenan content with Flames' depth

Friday, February 27, 2009 | 09:18 AM ET

The Calgary Flames faithful no doubt are hoping Mike Keenan was bluffing recently when the head coach told reporters he would be comfortable entering the Stanley Cup playoffs with the status quo.

"We're really comfortable with the depth that we have in the organization, and that's proven to be strong because you can't sustain the type of success we've had to this point without the depth," he said in a conference call.

Calgary, though, would probably have trouble sustaining its success without added punch up front — at centre and perhaps left wing — and on defence, areas that management could address leading into the NHL's March 4 trade deadline at 3 p.m. ET.

Canadiens add depth in Janik

Friday, February 27, 2009 | 08:57 AM ET

Ten days after acquiring Mathieu Schneider, the Montreal Canadiens further bolstered their defence by picking up Doug Janik from the Dallas Stars for forward Steve Begin on Thursday.

Janik, 28, brings 159 games of NHL experience to the Canadiens' blue-line. He posted one assist in 13 games with Dallas this season.

Veteran left-winger Steve Begin is the newest Star after collecting 10 points in 42 games with Montreal this season

Canucks GM Gillis has made his big move

Friday, February 27, 2009 | 08:53 AM ET

A lot of NHL general managers are expected to wait until March 4 to make a big trade to shore up their teams as the NHL season enters the home stretch.

Vancouver GM Mike Gillis, on the other hand, made his big move back in December, long before next week's trade deadline, when he signed unrestricted free agent Mats Sundin to a one-year deal.

The former Toronto Maple Leafs captain had a slow start to his career in Vancouver, and the team didn't exactly flourish when he first took to the ice with his new teammates — the Canucks lost 10 of their 12 games in January.
