A great joker, a fierce competitor - that's Doug Gilmour

It’s hard to hear the name Doug Gilmour and not smile.

Unless you played against him, that is.

Time for Canucks to get moving, get winning

Thursday, January 29, 2009 | 10:45 PM ET

In many ways, the Vancouver Canucks are like the Olympic athletes village: unfinished business with an uncertain future.

But at least the Canucks are financially solvent.

But they have also been in a free fall, losers of seven straight overall and eight straight at home, including a 5-3 decision to the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night in which they allowed a 3-1 lead to disappear.

Who could be next on Detroit's "lock up" list? Try Lidstrom

Thursday, January 29, 2009 | 10:47 AM ET

Considering my recent history with Red Wing fans, allow me to begin this blog with the following disclaimer: I have not spoken to anyone in the Detroit organization about this. It is purely guesswork on my part.

Now, let’s go to the thesis: Ken Holland’s next big negotiation will not be Marian Hossa, Johan Franzen, Jiri Hudler or Mikael Samuelsson.

It will be Nicklas Lidstrom.

(This, of course, is assuming Holland already doesn’t know Lidstrom’s future plans.)

Wings do it again with Zetterberg deal

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 | 09:39 AM ET

During the Red Wings' run to the 2008 Stanley Cup championship, general manager Ken Holland was asked how he convinces players to take less than market value to be in Detroit.

"We try to give them the best of everything," Holland said. "We have a private plane, making travel as easy as possible. We have a passionate fan base, but one that allows our players to have their privacy. And we promise them that the money we save on their individual contracts will be used to get other great players to come here."

"We don't want to win a Cup. We want to win Cups.'"

Kovalev, city, fans saved all-star weekend

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 | 05:38 PM ET

I just had a brief sober moment and decided it would be a great time to dive into a blog about NHL All-Star Weekend.

The people of Montreal were thrilled about of having all the league's superstars in one city, and they let them know it. Hundreds of curious fans showed up at the airport to get a glimpse of Crosby, OV, Big Joe Thornton, Marleau, Luongo et al as they made their way towards the Bell Centre. The city had an amazing buzz over it before the festivities even begun.

You might think it's been a cold winter. But for a few teams in the NHL, it’s about to heat up.

Cinderella story emerges at European championships

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 | 02:10 PM ET

The European figure skating championships were held this past week in Helsinki and competitors from the host country served notice that they are ready to take on the world.

A Cinderella story emerged in the ladies event with the crowning of Laura Lepisto as the first-ever Finnish woman to take the European crown.

Lepisto's teammate Susanna Poykio took the bronze, and, as if having two Finns on the women’s podium for the first time wasn’t enough, countrywoman Kiira Korpi finished fifth despite a disappointing free program.

Craziest. Week. Ever.

Tuesday, January 27, 2009 | 12:02 PM ET

Thinking about how to write this blog, I didn't know where to begin. But here goes, a summary of one crazy week — the last two days being the most exciting.

We were in Cortina, Italy getting ready for a set of downhill training runs that were supposed to start on Tuesday. After a disappointing race in Altenmarkt I was ready to get at it again, with less clutter in my mind and renewed passion in my heart. David, my fiancee, also joined me in Cortina on Monday, a very welcomed roommate. I always feel at home when I'm with him. He makes the time on the road much more pleasant.

But plans changed as the snow started to fall — over two metres by the time it was done. After a bunch of cancellations we ended up with just one training run on Friday, a downhill race on Saturday, a giant slalom on Sunday and a super-G on Monday (the second scheduled downhill was lost on account of the weather).

Bye bye Beckham?

Monday, January 26, 2009 | 05:18 PM ET

For those of you hoping to catch a glimpse of David Beckham this summer at BMO Field, you may be waiting for a long time. I don’t think Mr. Posh Spice is going to be coming back to Major League Soccer and his Los Angeles Galaxy teammates, judging by the noises being made over in Milan.

This week, when Beckham was asked if he would be prolonging his stay in Serie A beyond the end of his loan agreement with AC Milan, he replied, “I can’t say what will happen. My contract says that I’ll be here until March. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Doesn’t sound like someone who is desperate to get back to Los Angeles, does it?
