"Darius has done everything he was supposed to do with his rehabilitation from last year's surgery," Trail Blazers president and general manager Steve Patterson said in a statement.

"After consultation with several knee experts, it has been determined that this is the best course of action."

Miles was Portland's leading scorer through 15 starts last season, only to be derailed by cartilage damage in his right knee.

After having surgery last Dec. 16, he returned from a 34-game absence and finished with career-high averages in points (13.9) and minutes (32.1) in 40 appearances.

The six-year NBA veteran hasn't played since.

Miles has averaged 10.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 blocked shots and 27.7 minutes in 412 games (190 starts) since being drafted third overall out of high school by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2000.

He also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
