Canada's under-18 women's basketball team killed two birds with one stone at the FIBA Americas Championship on Friday in Gurabo, Puerto Rico.
With a 61-40 victory over Mexico, Canada not only secured a semifinal berth against either the United States or Argentina, but also clinched a spot at next year's under-19 World Championship.
Paige Crozan led the Canadians with 13 points while Kaylee Halvorson got 12 and Cheyanne Roger added 11. Michelle Hudyn grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The game started slowly, but both teams picked up their offensive play in the second quarter and Canada led 23-15 at the half.
The Canadians stretched that lead to 20 points in the third, never looking back for a comfortable win.
The semifinals are set for Saturday. Canada's opponent will be decided late Friday night.
