Bryant is in a court battle to try to keep his mother from auctioning off mementoes from his high school days in Pennsylvania and his early NBA career. A southern New Jersey auction house is suing for the right to sell the stuff after the NBA star's lawyers wrote the firm to say it could not.

Bryant contends that his mother, Pamela Bryant, doesn't have the right to sell the collectibles including his Lower Merion High School letters, a 2000 NBA championship ring and hundreds of other items. Berlin, N.J.-based Goldin Auctions says Bryant told his mother years ago that he didn't want the items. Legal papers say Pamela Bryant intended to use her $450,000 advance to buy a new home.

Bryant had surgery Saturday on his torn Achilles tendon, ending his season with two games left in the Los Angeles Lakers' playoff chase. Bryant's foot will be immobilized for about a month to prevent him from stretching out the tendon, followed by a lengthy rehabilitation process. Nobody knows how the injury will affect Bryant's play.

Lakers trainer Gary Vitti thinks Bryant will need six to nine months for recovery from the most serious injury of his 17-year NBA career. Given Bryant's history of swift recovery from countless minor injuries, Vitti and Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak both believe the 34-year-old guard could be back for their season opener in the fall.

Bryant scored a season-high 47 points and the Los Angeles Lakers pulled closer to a playoff berth with a 113-106 victory over the short-handed Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

Credit Bryant for displaying more fantasy greatness. He is averaging 28.0 points over a 5-1 LA stretch and continues to fire away at will and get to the free-throw line with 18 attempts at the stripe against a befuddled Portland defensive scheme orchestrated by coach Terry Stotts.

Bryant had 25 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in Sunday's 109-95 loss at the Clippers.

Bryant is averaging 11.0 assists and 8.0 rebounds over the last four games. He's only averaged 22.8 points, though, over that stretch while shooting 37.2 percent.

Bryant accounted for a triple-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in the Lakers' 101-81 win over the Mavericks on Tuesday.

The triple-double was the 19th of Bryant's career and his second of the season - and of course it came on the night when Shaquille O'Neal's jersey was retired.

Bryant has passed fellow Los Angeles Lakers great Wilt Chamberlain for fourth place on the NBA's career scoring list. He made a pull-up jumper from the free throw line with 7:54 remaining in the second quarter to eclipse Chamberlain's mark of 31,419 points. Bryant tied Chamberlain 22 seconds earlier with a layup.

Bryant entered the game four points behind Chamberlain. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar tops the NBA's career scoring list with 38,387 points, Karl Malone is second with 36,928 and Michael Jordan is third with 32,292. The 34-year-old Bryant is in his 17th season - all with the Lakers.

Bryant had 31 points and seven assists in his first game there filling in for the injured Metta World Peace to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 120-117 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday night, their 22nd straight win over the Timberwolves.

World Peace, the team's small forward, will have surgery on a torn meniscus on Thursday and leave the Lakers to chase the playoffs without him. Bryant is now 35 points from tying Wilt Chamberlain for fourth on the career scoring list.

Bryant had 30 points in a 113-103 loss in Milwaukee on Thursday night.

The Los Angeles Lakers star has 30 or more points in three straight games and is averaging 29.5 since missing two games with a sprained ankle.

Bryant has a bone spur in his left foot. Following Los Angeles' 113-103 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night, the Lakers revealed the injury. He left the arena using one crutch, but appeared to be walking without pain.

Bryant led the Lakers with 30 points, leaving him four points behind Wilt Chamberlain for fourth place on the NBA's career list. Bryant played 36 1/2 minutes and didn't show any signs of difficulty during the game. "Inflamed on me. I'll be all right," he told Yahoo Sports. Bryant struggled from the field, going 6 of 17, but made 18 of 20 free throws.

Bryant scored 36 points for the Lakers in a 109-103 loss to the Warriors on Monday night.

Bryant is averaging 32.3 points for the Lakers against the Warriors this season.
