Los Angeles Lakers centre Pau Gasol couldn't be happier about his new teammate.

One day after it was reported that Canadian point guard Steve Nash is heading to L.A. in a sign-and-trade with the Phoenix Suns, Gasol held a 45-minute video chat with fans from around the world.

On a day off from training with the Spanish national basketball team in Madrid, Gasol expressed his excitement for the deal.

"It will be a huge honour to play alongside Steve," Gasol said. "He's one of the best point guards to ever play the game and still has a lot of juice in him… I know he makes everyone around him better. So it's an exciting moment, I think, for all the Lakers fans and the Lakers family."

"He's probably the most unselfish player in the NBA — one of the top assists players in the history of the game," Gasol added.

When asked from a fan via Twitter about his future with the team, Gasol said that it was out of his hands. He said that retiring as a Laker was "a nice thought" and that he plans to help the team "get back to winning championships."
