Ugueth Urbina's mother kidnapped in Venezuela
The mother of Detroit Tigers pitcher Ugueth Urbina has been kidnapped by four unidentified men in Venezuela, police announced Thursday.
The men took Maura Villareal from a house owned by the pitcher in a Caracas suburb Wednesday, said Joel Rengifo, director of the Venezuela's anti-kidnapping police force.
Urbina, formerly of the Montreal Expos, has left the Tigers temporarily to return to his native Venezuela.
"The Detroit Tigers organization is working with Major League Baseball and its contacts in Venezuela to assist Ugueth," the club said in statement.
The kidnappers have not contacted any of Villareal's family members, according to police.
