New York catcher Jorge Posada gets a hand on home plate umpire Jim Joyce as teammate Johnny Damon, second from left, has words with Blue Jays catcher Rod Barajas in the eighth inning on Tuesday in New York. (Kathy Willens/Associated Press)Toronto Blue Jays reliever Jesse Carlson and New York Yankees teammates Jorge Posada and Shelley Duncan were suspended Wednesday for their actions in a bench-clearing brawl the previous night.
Toronto manager Cito Gaston said Carlson was suspended for three games and fined $3,000 US by Major League Baseball. Gaston also said Blue Jays catcher Rod Barajas was fined $1,000.
Carlson was not planning an appeal.
Posada and reserve Duncan were suspended for three games. Posada was fined $2,500, and Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long and pitcher Edwar Ramirez also were fined.
Duncan planned on appealing the suspension. Posada wouldn't appeal the penalty, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the Associated Press.
After two Toronto Blue Jays batters were hit by pitches earlier in the game, Carlson threw behind Posada in the eighth. The benches slowly cleared, but nothing came of it at that time.
Later in the inning, Posada came in to score and bumped Carlson, who was backing up home plate. Carlson confronted Posada, who shoved aside home plate umpire Jim Joyce.
The two players scuffled and members of both teams were brought into a melee near home plate, with Barajas and Duncan squaring off.
Carlson leads all Toronto pitchers with 68 appearances. He is 1-5 with a 4.43 earned-run average.
Posada is enjoying a strong comeback year after battling injuries last season. He has hit 21 home runs and 76 runs batted in, with a .281 batting average.
