The Colorado Rockies promoted slugger Jason Giambi from the minor leagues on Tuesday.

They also called up pitchers Randy Flores and Joel Peralta and catcher Paul Phillips.

Giambi, the American League's most valuable player in 2000, signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Aug. 24.

The 38-year-old impressed with the triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox, hitting .444 (8-18) with two home runs, four runs batted in and six walks in six games.

Giambi began the season with the Oakland Athletics, who released him on Aug. 7.

Giambi hit a paltry .193 with 11 home runs, 40 runs batted in and 39 runs scored in 83 games with Oakland.

He had just seven hits in his final 57 at-bats, landing on the disabled list with a strained right quadriceps muscle..

Giambi broke into the major leagues in 1995 with Oakland.

Seven years later, he signed with the New York Yankees for seven years and $120 million US contract, but became a free agent when they declined a $22-million US contract option for this season.

Giambi rejoined the Athletics for a reported $4 million US on Jan. 7.

He is a lifetime .282 hitter with 407 HRs, 1,319 RBIs and 1,155 runs in 1,933 MLB games.
