Canadian pitcher Danielle Lawrie was the victim of poor run support Saturday, tossing an eight-inning gem against Venezuela, only to lose 1-0 at the Canada Cup women's softball tournament.
Maria Soto's single in the eighth inning scored pinch-runner Anais Puerta with the game's lone run in Surrey, B.C.
The hit spoiled an otherwise excellent outing from Langley, B.C., native Lawrie, who gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out seven over eight innings.
Venezuelan starter Mariangee Bogado was also solid, giving up five hits, walking one and striking out four over eight shutout innings.
Melanie Matthews of Surrey had two hits for Canada (0-1).
Canada's next game is Sunday against the Netherlands.
